Ballast wagons finished

Photographed on my layout, Framsden

A while ago, in an earlier post, I showed some ballast wagons I was building.   They are interesting vehicles because they are very short, have dumb buffers;  the ends are different;  and the sides slope.   They were fun to build and some time I must complete the brake van to go with them.   There was some doubt whether they were originally in varnished wood livery or painted dark red.   I chose to 'paint' them in varnished wood.   The brake van will be dark red.   The thing I really like is the way the loads have come out.   I used a bed of Milliput to add some weight and provide a slightly varied surface and then added coal ash over the top, which gave a very nice variegated effect.
